What's new
Streaming platform Netflix has released a new Turkish drama titled "Not a Stranger," directed by Mert Baykal. The original Turkish title for the show is "Seni Tanıyorum," which translates to "I know you." Unlike traditional Turkish television dramas, or dizis, which air weekly over long periods with broad storylines and large ensemble casts, Netflix's approach focuses on tighter narratives and smaller character groups. While previous streaming attempts have struggled to balance traditional tropes with new formats, "Not a Stranger" keeps viewers engaged through its complete run.
About the series
The series revolves around three millennial central figures:
- Funda (played by Elçin Sangu): A prominent artist who finds that caring for her newborn, Mavi, makes it difficult to focus on her artwork.
- Ilker (played by Ozan Dolunay): Funda's husband, who wants his wife to return to her art but feels exasperated by her strict requirements for potential childminders.
- Nazlı (played by Melis Sezen): A woman originally working at the local swimming baths who forms a strong connection with baby Mavi and is hired to live in the home as a childminder.
What to expect
An uneasy dynamic develops as soon as Nazlı joins the household. After quickly avoiding an initial video chat with Ilker, her first face-to-face encounter with him in the kitchen creates immediate tension. Ilker admits to Funda in private that he and Nazlı previously had a one-night stand. Funda surprisingly chooses to keep Nazlı on as the childminder despite the confession. However, Ilker is not fully truthful: his past with Nazlı was actually a prolonged, intense affair that he chose to end in order to marry Funda.
As Nazlı stays in the house, she and Ilker spend significant time together, especially after Funda actively encourages them to spend a day with one another. This unusual decision prompts questions about whether Funda is intentionally endangering her marriage to spark her artistic creativity.
