A fresh animated sci-fi Western is making its way to streaming screens as Netflix prepares to debut Bass X Machina on Tuesday, November 3. The eight-episode adult animation project offers a complete reimagining of the historic lawman's legend.
What's new
The upcoming animated title presents a dramatic shift from traditional depictions of Bass Reeves. Voiced by Academy Award nominee Brian Tyree Henry, this version of Reeves is portrayed as a bounty hunter equipped with a prosthetic arm. Functioning as judge, jury, and executioner, he fights across a steampunk landscape populated by outlaws, mechanical hazards, and supernatural entities. The storyline follows his recruitment by the government for a critical assignment to prevent the resurrection of the Confederacy. However, his efforts to ensure justice inadvertently jeopardize the family he aims to shield.
About the series
The historic figure originally escaped enslavement to become one of the first Black Deputy U.S. Marshals west of the Mississippi, capturing more than 3,000 outlaws. His life was recently depicted in the live-action drama Lawmen: Bass Reeves, created by Chad Feehan, executive produced by Taylor Sheridan, and starring David Oyelowo. That show became the most-watched global premiere on Paramount+ in 2023 before arriving on Netflix. Additional updates regarding future seasons of that specific show are not specified in the source; please check the official notice.
What to expect
Animation for the new release is handled by Studio Mir, who previously collaborated with Netflix on the Devil May Cry adaptation. Like previous depictions, the narrative highlights his identity as a family man alongside the action. The project features a voice cast that includes:
- Ten-time Grammy nominee Janelle Monáe, who sings the opening theme song and voices Reeves' wife, Glory.
- Tati Gabrielle as Dana Starr, an optimistic young aspiring engineer who acts as his unlikely ally.
- Cree Summer voicing Ahni.
- Chaske Spencer voicing Lighthorse.
- Currie Graham voicing Rivenbark.
- Starletta DuPois voicing Etta.
Specific premiere times are not specified in the source; please check the official notice.
