Recreating the majesty of prehistoric life, a Japanese live production brings full-scale ancient creatures to life on stage. Titled Dino-A-Live: Dinosaur Odyssey, the show makes its overseas debut in Singapore at the Resorts World Convention Centre from Dec 3 to 6. Instead of using static museum displays or computer graphics, the production relies on physical mechanical replicas to place audiences directly inside a living ancient world.
What Creators Built
The 70-minute performance features 15 realistic robotic dinosaurs that move freely across the venue. Among the ancient species presented in the show are:
- Tyrannosaurus rex
- Triceratops
- Stegosaurus
- Brachiosaurus
- Ankylosaurus
The mechanical figures are powered by a patented technology called Dino-Techne, created by Kazuya Kanemaru and his company On-Art Corp. Human performers inside the suits operate the mechanical models to generate natural movement and emotion. Kanemaru began building the concept over two decades ago to help museums attract visitors. Developing each physical model requires about six months of work from initial design to stage readiness.
Why It Matters
Rather than portraying ancient reptiles strictly as aggressive monsters, the non-verbal performance presents them as living beings with emotional depth. Using music, dance, and theatrical effects, the storyline highlights a touching relationship between a Tyrannosaurus rex parent and its child, including a painful separation scene.
The creator hopes the experience will inspire younger viewers to appreciate the beauty of living creatures and nature. Beyond the main stage, visitors can inspect rare fossil replicas and collectibles at an on-site marketplace called Dino Mart, or pose alongside a 12m-long Tyrannosaurus rex.
