What happened

According to a report by Dawn, Pakistani security forces killed nine suspected terrorists during two separate intelligence-based operations in Balochistan's Kachhi and Wadh districts on October 26. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) stated that the actions targeted members of Fitna al-Hindustan, a title designated by the state for Balochistan-based militant groups to emphasize India's alleged involvement in regional destabilisation.

During the operation in Kachhi, troops destroyed a militant hideout, killed seven suspects in an exchange of fire, and recovered arms and ammunition. In Wadh, security personnel intercepted moving suspects, killing two in a gunfight and seizing weapons. The military confirmed that sanitisation operations are continuing in the region alongside a counterterrorism initiative named "Azm e Istehkam."

Key facts

  • Official Responses: President Asif Ali Zardari commended the security forces' professional capabilities and stated that foreign-backed plots would be thwarted. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also praised counterterrorism efforts, stating that those trying to undermine national security would not succeed, according to the Associated Press of Pakistan.
  • Recent Operations: The operations follow multiple earlier clashes in October, including an October 18 operation where an army major and four militants died, an October 17 action killing eight militants, and an October 12–13 raid in Washuk that left five militants dead. Provincial authorities also recently detained around 90 terrorism suspects for legal proceedings.
  • Security Data: According to figures from the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies, nationwide terrorist attacks reached 225 in September—a 13.1 percent rise from August and a 12-year high. Balochistan experienced 131 of these attacks, representing 58.2 percent of the national total. Security forces conducted 35 operations in Balochistan during September, resulting in 171 militant deaths.

Why it matters

As reported by Dawn, the operations come amidst a significant increase in militant violence across Balochistan, which has become the primary location for security forces' counterterrorism actions. The government's adoption of the term Fitna al-Hindustan underlines official claims regarding foreign sponsorship of local violence, while political leaders maintain their support for sustained military campaigns to restore peace.
