Scholarship Overview

The Honjo International Scholarship Foundation provides monthly assistance to international students enrolled in or planning to attend master's or doctoral programs in Japan, including institutions such as the University of Tokyo. For the 2027 scholarship cycle, the application period begins on September 1, 2026, and closes on October 31, 2026. Roughly 10 candidates are expected to receive funding. The program covers all research fields and academic disciplines, supporting qualified individuals across different educational backgrounds.

Who Can Apply

International applicants from various countries, including Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and China, are eligible to apply. Qualification requirements include:

  • Current enrollment at a Japanese graduate school, or residence outside Japan with confirmed admission from a Japanese graduate institution.
  • A minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • Demonstrated English proficiency with an IELTS score of at least 6.5 or a TOEFL iBT score of at least 90.
  • Submission of academic records, including transcripts and degree certificates.
  • An application essay and one or two recommendation letters.

Candidates must also fulfill the independent graduate admission requirements of their chosen institution.

Benefits

The scholarship offers monthly funding throughout the minimum timeframe needed to earn the degree. Funding amounts depend on the program duration:

  • One to two-year degree programs: ¥230,000 per month.
  • Three-year degree programs: ¥210,000 per month.
  • Programs lasting longer than three years: ¥180,000 per month.

Tuition fees are not covered by this award, so students must arrange separate funding to cover university tuition expenses.

How to Apply

Interested candidates must submit their application materials directly through the Honjo International Scholarship Foundation's official website prior to the deadline. University pre-selection is not required. Applicants outside Japan must secure acceptance from a Japanese graduate school independently, as winning the award does not grant university admission.
