What's new
Netflix has officially acquired AWOL, a new dramedy series, after prevailing in a competitive bidding war. The streamer continues to expand its television offerings by securing high-profile talent alongside major library updates, such as adding over 50 licensed feature films on October 1, 2026. The acquisition further strengthens the platform's comedy pipeline for upcoming content slates.
About the series
AWOL brings together a creative team with notable experience in major feature films and television productions. Key facts about the project include:
- The series originates from John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the filmmaking duo behind the 2023 fantasy adventure film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
- Craig Rowin serves as the writer for the project. His previous writing credits include The Off Weeks as well as Apple TV+'s The Big Door Prize.
- Specific storyline details, character descriptions, and plot points are not specified in the source; please check the official notice.
In related franchise news, Netflix was also previously developing a separate live-action series titled The Forgotten Realms with Shawn Levy. However, that project was completely unrelated to Honor Among Thieves and has reportedly been scrapped.
What to expect
Because AWOL remains in its early development stages, key production milestones are still pending. Detailed information regarding the confirmed cast, episode counts, and precise filming schedules are not specified in the source; please check the official notice.
Before reaching screens, the series must clear development, casting, and principal photography. As a result, a debut in 2027 is considered unlikely, while a release in 2028 or later remains a possibility. Netflix has not yet announced a confirmed release timetable.
