What's new
Director Valeska Grisebach presents a distinct crime drama with The Dreamed Adventure. Co-written with fellow filmmaker Lisa Bierwirth, the project subverts classic storytelling by blending influences from westerns, detective stories, and the works of Turkish filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan. The production screens at the Belfast Film Festival on Sunday, November 1st. Additional broadcast dates or streaming releases are not specified in the source; please check the official notice.
About the series
Set in Svilengrad, a Bulgarian town located near the borders of Turkey and Greece, the plot centers on Said, played by Syuleyman Alilov Letifov. Said returns to negotiate a black-market diesel transaction with a local figure called the Raven. While there, he reconnects with Veska, played by Yana Radeva, a former girlfriend working at an archaeological dig near the Turkish border. After Said unexpectedly vanishes, Veska investigates his disappearance and quietly takes over his business dealings. Her actions bring her to the attention of Iliya, played by Stoicho Kostadinov, a local kingpin who resides in a gated compound where pet peacocks roam.
What to expect
The drama captures a border region shaped by paranoia, reticence, and a shift from communism into capitalism. Rather than leaning on heavy action, the story builds tension through negotiations and grievances. Viewers can look forward to several key elements:
- A clever script where crucial plot clues surface during casual conversations over drinks.
- Claustrophobic visual framing by cinematographer Bernhard Keller that blurs the lines between shakedowns and flirtation.
- A raw performance by non-professional actor Yana Radeva, who brings resourcefulness and empathy to an unconventional protagonist.
- A persistent threat of danger maintained across a three-hour runtime with minimal physical violence.
